Is Practice Better HIPAA compliant: what the vendor says
Practice Better says it maintains full compliance with HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). HHS's Office for Civil Rights says it does not endorse, certify or recommend specific technology (cloud guidance, last reviewed December 23, 2022), so HHS gives no "HIPAA certified" status to a vendor.
Every plan, Sprout at $0 a month included, can sign a BAA (business associate agreement) in the account, as read on October 30, 2026. Signing does not by itself make your practice compliant, the help article adds. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Try Practice Better →Signing the Business Associate Agreement in your account
An older Practice Better security article says the agreement is available on request; the newer one has you sign the BAA in your account:
- Go to Settings (the gear icon), choose View All, then Regulatory Compliance.
- Click Review & Sign beside the United States HIPAA Business Associate Agreement.
- Click Get Started and fill in the form; Practice Better recommends the owner or a Practice Admin.
- Click Next and Save Changes; the signed copy can then be downloaded.
Practice Better says it cannot advise which agreements your practice requires.
What HIPAA asks of a practice, from HHS's rule text
HHS says a covered entity is a health care provider, a health plan or a health care clearinghouse, and a provider counts only if it sends health information electronically in a transaction for which HHS has adopted a standard (covered entities page, last reviewed August 21, 2024). A covered entity that shares protected health information with a vendor needs a contract or other written arrangement, called a business associate agreement (business associates page, last reviewed October 21, 2026).
The CMS Covered Entity Decision Tool and a lawyer can say whether your practice is covered. Coaches have their own page: do health coaches need to be HIPAA compliant.
Is Practice Better legit: the company, its terms and where data sits
Practice Better is made by Green Patch Inc., whose Terms of Service name Ontario and Canadian law. Practice Better says its data sits on encrypted drives on servers in the United States. The pricing FAQ says there are no contracts and that you can cancel your subscription at any time.
The trial gives new users 14 days on most plans and 30 days on Team. The sign-up asks for a credit card, which is charged at the end unless you cancel first. The trial FAQ says refunds are not offered at this time. See What is Practice Better and the Practice Better review.
Tools beside it: Zoom and other apps need their own agreements
Practice Better says its agreements do not extend to third-party tools used alongside it, and that Zoom requires a paid plan with its own signed BAA. Zoom for dietitians HIPAA compliant sets out the video options.
Healthie calls its EHR (electronic health record) ONC-certified and links a Business Associate Agreement in its footer. Kalix calls its telehealth HIPAA-compliant on Virtual Practice, $47 a month, billed monthly. Pick Healthie for that EHR, Kalix for that telehealth, Practice Better for a BAA on every plan.
