Best EHR for dietitians: five systems by charting and price
Among five EHR (electronic health record) systems, Kalix and Practice Better both name ADIME notes, and Kalix is the lower entry price at $27 a month, billed monthly. Practice Better's Starter plan, its first paid one, is $35 a month, billed monthly, as read on October 30, 2026.
The table draws on each vendor's own charting, pricing and help pages. A BAA (business associate agreement) is the written contract that HHS describes between a covered entity and a business associate handling its protected health information, under HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
| EHR | Note formats on its pages | HIPAA paperwork named | Price to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice Better | SOAP, ADIME, DAP, BIRP or a custom format | BAA signed in the account on every plan | Starter, $35 a month, billed monthly |
| Healthie | Smart-fill charting; calls its EHR ONC-certified | BAA link in its site footer | Core, $19.99 a month, billed monthly |
| Kalix | ADIME, SOAP and DAP; says it supports the Nutrition Care Process | Calls its telehealth HIPAA-compliant; names no BAA | Standard, $27 a month, billed monthly |
| SimplePractice | AI notes described as therapy notes | BAA link in its site footer | Starter, $49 a month, billed monthly |
| Practice Fusion | Provider-signed charts for physician practices | Not compared here | $199 a month per provider, annual commitment |

Try Practice Better →Note formats: SOAP, ADIME and the Nutrition Care Process
SOAP stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan. Practice Better's template page spells out ADIME as Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, and Monitoring/Evaluation, a charting method used mainly by registered dietitians (RD or RDN).
Practice Better's charting page names SOAP, ADIME, DAP, BIRP or a custom format, though its help center documents SOAP headings in the template builder, so check the template library in a trial. That trial runs 14 days on most plans or 30 days on Team, and the card entered at sign-up is charged at the end unless you cancel.
Kalix names ADIME, SOAP and DAP and says it supports the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Nutrition Care Process. SOAP notes for dietitians walks through the four parts.
HIPAA paperwork each vendor names
HHS's Office for Civil Rights says it does not certify technology or products, so a vendor's HIPAA claim is the vendor's own statement.
HHS and the CMS decision tool answer the covered-entity question for your own practice, and is Practice Better HIPAA compliant sets out the sources. This page covers software features and plans, not medical or legal advice.
Practice Better's help center says to sign the BAA in your account on every plan, Sprout included, while an older security article says it is available on request. Practice Better adds that signing does not by itself make a practice compliant and does not extend to other tools you use beside it. Healthie and SimplePractice each link a business associate agreement from their site footers.
Signed notes, cosigning and AI drafts
In Practice Better a signed note locks for good, with no edits and no change to its sharing settings. On Team, a second member such as a supervisor can cosign a signed note.
The AI Charting Assistant drafts notes that the practitioner reviews and signs before anything is filed. It costs $10 a month per practitioner for 1,200 minutes, $20 for 3,600 or $40 for 7,200, and its charting page and help center open it to every paid plan from Starter, though its pricing page says add-ons start at Professional. Healthie says additional fees apply for AI charting and shows no amount.
When a physician EHR like Practice Fusion is the wrong fit
Practice Fusion is $199 a month per provider with a required annual commitment. Its pricing page lists e-prescribing, chart signing, MIPS reporting and medical claims for one provider. A private-pay dietitian practice that needs none of those can start with Kalix at $27 a month or Practice Better at $35 a month, both billed monthly.
